affirmations: speaking things into existence
I believe in speaking things into existence. Spiritually and academically, I’ve been confronted time and again with the power of words. Words have power—so much power that they can portend our very destinies. What you say about yourself (verbally or written) can uplift or bring defeat.
I don’t allow my sons to say negative things about themselves. I don’t allow my students to say negative things about themselves, and I am certainly dedicated to speaking only positive things about myself. When my students say things like “I am not good at English” or “I’m not going to do well on this quiz”, I stop them and have them say they will be good at English, and they are going to do well on the quiz. They learn quickly that my classes are not places of defeat.
Speaking positively is not always easy. Sometimes, all we can see is trouble and failure, so it takes practice to break the habit of declaring trouble and failure. Practice doesn’t make perfect, as the saying goes, but it does create improvement. Tipping the scale in the direction of positive outcomes begins with a simple “yes” when “no” is the default.
